Introduction

Big Local Works (BLW) was established in 2017 as a legacy project of the Big Local South Bermondsey Partnership (BLBSP), to help improve the lives of local people by preparing for and sustaining them in employment and self-employment, supporting entrepreneurship, providing benefits and welfare support and by developing new community initiatives to meet local needs.  We work closely to deliver these important targets, with all sections of the local community and with partner organisations.

Background

Big Local is a Lottery-funded 10-year project which aims to bring together local talent, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations to make their area a better place to live and work in. There are 150 Big Local projects across the UK each with £1million to spend on improving their community.

The Big Local South Bermondsey Partnership (BLSBP) was established in 2012. Having recognised that the local area experienced higher levels of deprivation than the average for London and the UK, the Partnership concluded that suitable employment, benefits support and community development would provide a solution that could lead to longer-term structural change. Big Local Works (BLW) has developed from this initiative. It is a legacy project of BLSBP and aims to act as a springboard to improve local residents future.

BLW has operated as a separate organisation since January 2017 when it moved into its own premises. In March 2019 Big Local Works became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) to consolidate its future and independence.
